Video allegedly shows cop kicking suspect

A videotape allegedly shows a suspect being kicked by a Newark police officer during an arrest Friday morning.

Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy says alleged drunken driver Jamil Richardson, 23, crashed his vehicle into a divider and a utility pole. He was being followed by a fire truck when police cars joined in, pulling him over at McCarter Highway and Bridge Street.

The tape shows one of the police officers draw his gun while another pulled Richardson onto the ground. As the officers try to handcuff him, one of the cops is shown kicking the suspect twice.

Officials say Richardson had a clean record. He is charged with drunken driving, resisting arrest and eluding police. Internal affairs officials are now investigating whether the officer's actions went beyond reasonable force.
