Mountain lion sighted by motorist in Manalapan

Police and county wildlife officials are searching Friday for a mountain lion near the woods on the border of Marlboro and Manalapan.

One motorist reported Thursday seeing what appeared to be a cougar chasing a deer along Robertsville Road in Manalapan. Later in the day, an animal control officer says he saw the animal near a creek bed where police later found feline tracks.

Police have positioned bait near the area where the animal was sighted. The area has been rigged with motion sensing cameras to capture the cat on film. If sighted, wildlife officials say they will set traps to catch the mountain lion.

Police say the large cat sightings are a first for Manalapan Township.
