'Text-A-Tip' program leads to arrest

An anonymous "Text-A-Tip" service in Passaic County has led to the arrest of a man wanted for murder.

Sheriff Jerry Speziale set up the program three months ago and says a recent text message resulted in the arrest of 18-year-old Shaheem Fields. Detectives believe he shot and killed 17-year-old Jevon Kemp in Paterson last weekend.

Speziale says if you're not in danger and you see a crime, simply send a text message to 274637 (C-R-I-M-E-S). The system works almost instantaneously and keeps the tipper's identity confidential by first sending the message to a call center in Canada.

According to the sheriff's office, detectives have closed 60 percent of their "Text-A-Tip" cases.
