Butler residents evacuated for fear of dam burst

Residents were evacuated in Butler Sunday after officials feared a local dam had burst.

Tony Krieder, who lives on one of the low-lying streets in Butler, says firefighters went door-to-door to tell residents to leave their homes and head for higher ground. According to Butler Police Chief Edward Card, authorities thought several dams along the Pequannock River could burst due to the heavy rainfall Saturday.

Card says the dams were inspected and found to be intact, but the evacuations were a necessary precaution. The area experienced flooding due to the rain and rising river levels.
