Fairfield cop shooter appears in court

Preye Roberts, 24, of Nutley, appeared in court Wednesday on attempted murder and weapons charges.

Roberts is accused of shooting Fairfield Police Officer Gerald Veneziano on Jan. 30.

Cops say Roberts followed the officer in a case of road rage and shot him multiple times.Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert Laurino says Roberts was arrested Feb. 13 by Union Township police for allegedly firing a weapon. Markings on the ammunition matched the shell casings found at the scene where Veneziano was shot.

The 24-year-old Nutley native is still being held on $1 million bail for the Union County arrest.

If convicted, Roberts faces up to 30 years in prison.
