Prosecutors: NJ man fatally beat friend's toddler

(AP) - Murder charges have been filed against a northern New Jersey man accused of fatally beating a toddler he was caring for at a friend's home last weekend.

Bail was set a $1 million for Akel Ackie. The 22-year-old Passaic man also was charged Thursday with aggravated sexual assault. He's being held at the Passaic County Jail.

Passaic County prosecutors say Ackie was caring for a friend's 21-month-old daughter in the woman's Passaic home when the beating occurred Sunday.

The child was taken to St. Joseph's Children's Hospital in Paterson. She died Tuesday afternoon. An examination found she had suffered a serious brain injury.

Ackie faces a possible life sentence if convicted. It was not known if he had retained a lawyer.
