Newark marks first homicide-free month since 1966

The City of Newark recorded its first homicide-free calendar month since 1966 in March.

Newark has been without a murder for 32 days. The city hopes to best the 43 day record set in 2008.

Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy said shooting incidents are down 18 percent and other violent crimes are down an average of 14 percent compared to a year ago.

McCarthy also said progress against drug trade in the city has helped decrease numbers in crime.
