Man, fiancee slain during apparent carjacking

(AP) - An engaged couple returning to theirnorthern New Jersey home early Sunday were fatally shot in whatauthorities believe was a botched carjacking.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said 27-year-old MichaelMuchiaki and his 25-year-old girlfriend, Nia Haqq, were both shottwice in the head. They were found near their car, which was nottaken.

The couple had attended a party in New Brunswick and returned totheir Jersey City home around 3 a.m., DeFazio said.

As they parked their car, they were approached by a man and twowomen, who later fled the scene in another vehicle.

DeFazio said that based on the crime scene and witnessstatements, it appears the victims were shot during an unsuccessfulcarjacking. Authorities believe their car could not be takenbecause it had anti-theft device.
