Jersey City couple slain in apparent carjacking

An engaged couple returning home from their engagement party were gunned down in an apparent carjacking early Sunday morning.

Michael Muchiaki, 27, and his girlfriend Nia Haqq, 25, were both shot twice in the head. They were found near their car on Randolph Avenue in Jersey City.

The pair was returning to their Jersey City home after attending a party in New Brunswick around 3:00 a.m. As they parked their car, they were approached by a man and two women, who later fled the scene in another vehicle.

Hudson County Prosecutor Edward DeFazio said that based on the crime scene and witness statements, it appears the victims were shot during an unsuccessful carjacking.

Authorities believe their car could not be taken because it had anti-theft device.
