Hillsborough installs official 'quiet zones'
The Township of Hillsborough becomes the first in Somerset County to install "quiet zones," ending the sound of horns from trains near residential areas. As a result of the new law, train crossings will have extra warning gates, flashing lights and a warning bell.
Under federal law, train engineers are permitted to sound the horn at their discretion for emergency and safety purposes.
Hillsborough officials began implementing quiet zones in late 2008.
