Brush fire spurs evacuations in central NJ

(AP) - Several Sayreville residents werebriefly evacuated Sunday when a large brush fire that consumedseveral acres threatened their homes.

Some firefighters sustained minor injuries while battling theblaze, which broke out shortly after 2 p.m. in some marshy areas inneighboring South River and produced clouds of thick, black smoke.

As that fire began to subside, some flames spread across atributary of the Raritan River, consuming several trees and grassyareas in Sayreville and spurring the evacuations. No homes weredamaged, and no residents were injured.

Dozens of firefighters battled the fast-moving blaze, which wasbrought under control around 5 p.m.

The fire remains under investigation, but is not consideredsuspicious.
