Bergenfield teacher murdered in Dumont

Police are investigating the murder of a Bergenfield High School teacher in Dumont.

Dumont police officers responded to the Shanley residence after a friend reported to police that Debra Shanely never showed up to a meeting and was not responding to phone calls.

According to the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office, Debra Shanley was found dead inside her home at 41 Garden St. Shanley, also a member of the Dumont Board of Education, was apparently beaten and stabbed to death.

Her husband, Peter Shanley, was found in the home with a lacerated neck and broken ankle. He was taken to Hackensack University Medical Center where he remains listed in stable condition.

Peter Shanley has been charged with the murder of his wife, Debra, and two weapons offenses. Bail has been set for $1.5 million.
