Police mull consolidation of dispatchers

Police are considering merging police dispatchers from among six shore communities.

Dispatchers and emergency responders from Avon, Belmar, Bradley Beach, Lake Como, Neptune City and Neptune would be consolidated into one central unit under this plan.

Proponents say the change would save the towns $3.2 million in a five-year time span.

Officials boast that taxpayers in all these towns will not only save money, but that residents will also receive better emergency care. They say that because the dispatch center would be operated by civilians, more police officers would be able to patrol the streets.
