Layoffs loom in Bergen County

Notices were sent out by certified letter Wednesday warning of layoffs in Bergen County.

At least 70 people are being laid off in order to help balance the county?s budget. The poor economy and a reduction in state aid are being blamed. A Bergen County spokesperson says that the county has a $4 million structural deficit.

The county says that union leaders were asked to forgo a 3.5 percent pay raise, but declined. The county also says that the layoff plan could change if negotiations continue.
