Union City fire destroys 2 apartment buildings
(AP) - Union City officials say a fast-movingfire that destroyed two apartment buildings and several vehicles onSunday has finally been extinguished.
The fire, which displaced about 50 people, produced thick, blacksmoke that could be seen for miles. No residents were hurt, but sixfirefighters were treated at the scene for minor injuries.
The blaze broke out about 11 a.m. on Palisades Avenue,apparently in a car in one of the building garages. Dozens offirefighters contended with the smoke as flames shot out of thebuildings, but the fire was contained by 1:30 p.m. and broughtunder control a short time later, though it continued to smolderfor a few hours.
The cause of the blaze was not immediately clear, Jersey CityFire Director Armando Roman said.
