Paramus seeks furlough days for employees

Paramus officials are asking all borough employees, including police officers, to take 20 days of unpaid time off to help cut nearly $3 million from the 2010 budget.

Union leaders say the furlough days would reduce the borough's salaries by 8 percent.

Paramus Mayor James Tedesco says the plan will be a joint effort by both parties, "we will be meeting with the unions to discuss options because they're going to be partners in this."

Borough officials say the measure is only part of the steps needed to reach a fiscal goal of limiting tax increases to 2.5 percent.
