NJ Transit riders say fare hike is unfair

NJ Transit riders are bracing for fare increases starting today.

Fares for local bus and light rail riders will increase 10 percent. Train fares and inter-city bus fares will increase by 25 percent.

The off-peak round-trip discount will be discontinued as of today. The tickets will no longer be accepted after May 23. NJ Transit officials said a fare increase was required to help close a budget gap approaching $300 million for the next fiscal year.

Riders tell News 12 New Jersey the increases are forcing them to reconsider using the service.
