Newark police officer accused of excessive force

(AP) - A Newark police detective has been charged with using excessive force against a 15-year-old during an incident that was caught on video surveillance tape.

Detective Angel Pared has been suspended without pay from theNewark Police Department. He is charged with four counts, includingaggravated assault, official misconduct and falsifying policereports.

Prosecutors said Monday that the 28-year-old Pared assaulted theteenager on March 24 and arrested him, allegedly falsifying reportsabout the incident.

Charges against the teen have been dropped.

Newark Police Director Garry McCarthy says his department has azero tolerance policy on use of excessive force.

A call to Pared's attorney, Anthony Fusco, was not immediatelyreturned.
