Appeals court rejects NJ gov's ban on donations

(AP) - A three-judge appeals court panel hasrejected New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's executive order banningstate worker unions from making political donations over $300 percampaign.

The court ruled Friday the order exceeded executive power. The ruling will take effect July 1 to give Christie time toappeal to the state Supreme Court.

The Republican instituted the ban through an executive order onhis first day in office, making good on a campaign promise to closea loophole in the state's pay-to-play rules.

Public employee unions - which donate heavily to Democrats - hadbeen exempt.

Christie said he believes the same campaign donation rulesshould apply to everyone.

The unions argued they should not be treated the same ascorporations that do business with the state.
