Oil cleanup techniques developed in NJ
Many of the techniques being used to clean up the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico were conceived and tested at a naval base in New Jersey.
At the Oil and Hazardous Materials Simulated Environmental Test Tank, experts create controlled oil slicks and try new methods and equipment to clean them up.
Workers also test skimmers, dispersants and burning methods in the tank, which has simulated ocean waves and salinity.
Experts from 24 countries around the world are currently working at the tank to develop successful oil-removal techniques.
