Wayne police officer shot in gas station robbery

A Wayne police officer was shot this morning as he responded to a report of a robbery at an Exxon gas station near Route 23 and Packanack Lake Road.

Police received the 911 calls and panic alarms coming from the gas station just after midnight. Seven victims were herded into an office in the back of the Tiger Mart while the suspects stole cash and cartons of cigarettes.

Officer Brian Worell, a 14-year veteran with the Wayne Police Department, arrived on the scene as the alleged suspects were fleeing. Worell exchanged fire with the suspects before chasing them along Packanack Lake Road.

Worell suffered a graze wound to the head as a result of the shooting. He was treated and released from St. Joseph's Hospital in Paterson.

Police are still searching for the two alleged robbers.
