8 former NJ justices criticize gov's court remake

(AP) - Eight former New Jersey Supreme Courtjustices are asking Gov. Chris Christie to reconsider his decisionto reshape the court by ousting the only black justice.

In a letter made public Thursday, former justices Robert L.Clifford, James Coleman, Marie Garibaldi, Alan Handler, StewartPollock, Deborah Poritz, Gary Stein and James Zazzali urgedChristie to consider "the effect of such a decision on judicialindependence."

Last week, Christie announced he would not reappoint JusticeJohn Wallace, saying he wants to remake the court with moreconservative justices.

Christie says he appreciates the input, but it's his choice tomake.

He added: "If they'd like to make those choices, there'sanother election in 2013, they can feel free to get on the ballotand see how they do."
