Princeton will issue ID cards to illegal immigrants

Princeton Borough and Township have endorsed identification cards for illegal immigrants.

The cards will be issued by the Latin American Legal Defense and Education Fund (LALDEF) beginning on May 22. Claire Denis of LALDEF says the cards will help individuals gain access to community services.

The organization's website points out that the card will not be accepted outside of the two municipalities.

The cards will require proof of identity and residency to be issued.

The program is backed by local police agencies, who will accept the cards as official identification.

The program has already been adopted by the City of Trenton.
