Army colonel from W. Caldwell killed in Afghanistan
Essex County is mourning the loss of a hometown hero who was killed in Afghanistan. Officials say Army Col. John McHugh, of West Caldwell, was killed earlier this week when his convoy was hit by a roadside bomb. The 46-year-old soldier was stationed in Kansas and just left the United States a few days earlier to begin his tour of duty. Officials say McHugh is one of the highest-ranking members of the U.S. military to die in Afghanistan since the start of the war.
