Officer shot in scuffle with suspect in attempted robbery

An Essex County sheriff officer was shot after a scuffle with a suspect this morning near Broadway and 4th Avenue in Newark, police say.

Essex County Sheriff Armando Fontoura said the officer, Jason Haase, was on his way to work when he witnessed an apparent robbery. Hasse chased the suspect down 4th Avenue toward Broadway where he was shot while trying to apprehend the suspect.

Fontoura says the suspect reached into Hasse's gun holster while the struggle ensued and fired a shot from the policeman's pistol.

Fontoura says the officer was shot once in the leg as a result. Hasse's wallet managed to absorb the brunt of the bullet's impact. He was taken to UMDNJ Hospital with non-life threatening injuries and was later released.

The suspect fled the scene toward McCarter Highway, according to police. Sheriff Fontoura says investigators have a good description of the suspect and expect to make an arrest soon.
