In New Jersey's down economy, car thefts are up

Every 26 minutes a car is stolen in New Jersey.

News 12 New Jersey took a look at just how fast a car can be dismantled. Allstate Insurance had a team of three mechanics take apart a car at the Livingston Mall to call attention to Essex County's perennially high number of auto thefts. The mechanics at the mall took apart the Honda in 4 minutes and 44 seconds.

According to Allstate, cars represent 44 percent of all stolen property. Authorities say stolen cars are worth more money on the black market if they're sold part by part, rather than as a whole car.

Drivers can protect their investments by never leaving keys in the car and parking in well-lit areas.
