Primary elections held in New Jersey

Voters head to the polls today to vote in primary elections being held across the Garden State.

Primaries are being held in 13 congressional races, with 47 candidates running. The U.S. Justice Department says it has assigned personnel to monitor voting in Middlesex County.

The department announced yesterday that it will be checking to ensure that voters are provided assistance in Spanish as required under the Voting Rights Act.

One of the districts attracting attention is the Republican race in the 7th District.

The 7th District includes parts of Hunterdon, Middlesex, Somerset and Union counties. Leonard Lance is a freshman incumbent and is being challenged by three opponents. Bruce Baker and David Larsen are both small business owners. Lon Hosford says he is "shovel ready" for Congress.

All of Lance's challengers have ties to the tea party, which analysts say is not uncommon in the current political environment.

A Fairleigh Dickinson University Public Mind poll found 14 percent of registered voters identified today?s elections as the next time they would have an opportunity to vote.
