Men charged in Wayne police shooting plead not guilty
The two men charged with robbery and the attempted murder of a Wayne police officer have pleaded not guilty.
Nelson Otero, 46, of Fort Lee, and Maxcime Cagen, 46, of Floral Park, N.Y., are allegedly responsible for over a dozen armed robberies of gas stations, liquor stores and convenience stores in Bergen, Passaic and surrounding counties, according to a statement released by the Bergen County Prosecutor's Office.
The two are also charged with armed robbery and the subsequent shooting of Wayne Township Police Officer Brian Worell, who suffered a grazing wound to the head. Worell was treated and released the same day.
Otero and Cagen were arrested by a multi-county SWAT team on June 6 in Palisades Park.
The men appeared in Superior Court in Hackensack Monday. They pleaded not guilty to the robbery charges that include gas stations in both Bergen and Passaic counties.
Otero and Cagan are being held on $1 million bail at the Bergen County Jail.
