Irvington residents may catch tax break

Irvington is giving residents a reprieve in paying their property taxes for at least 30 days.

Mayor Wayne Smith and the City Council plan to extend the payment deadline to July 9, with no interest or penalties for most taxpayers.

Residents of Irvington have said their property taxes are getting out of control. This year, the city saw a 17-percent increase. City officials say they have about 2,000 delinquent accounts, which is about 20 percent of the city's property owners.
