Jersey City mom accused of leaving children home alone surrenders

The 24-year-old Jersey City mother accused of leaving her three young children home alone surrendered to Jersey City Police yesterday afternoon.

Dashnay Beckwith is charged with cruelty/neglect of children, abuse/abandonment of children and endangering the welfare of children.

Authorities say they received a tip from P.S. 30, which is the school that the 6-year-old boy attends. The school told police that Beckwith called him in sick on Friday, but he was also absent on Monday and Tuesday.

A community aide from the school went to Beckwith's apartment on Tuesday and discovered the three boys, ages 6, 3 and 2, alone without food or drink.

Beckwith told the Jersey Journal that she left the children home alone to go on a job interview and got delayed when she had to undergo a drug test.

According to Florida authorities, Beckwith has a record that includes child neglect involving a daughter who lives in that state, says the Jersey Journal report.
