Obama ousts Afghan commander McChrystal

(AP) - Until now, Gen. David Petraeus has been the man to whom Gen. Stanley McChrystal directly reported.

But now, Petraeus will be replacing McChrystal as the commanderof the Afghanistan war effort -- once Congress approves.

President Barack Obama sacked McChrystal today because of hisscornful remarks about administration officials in a magazineinterview.

Obama said the interview "undermines the civilian control ofthe military that is at the core of our democratic system."

He fired McChrystal after summoning him from Afghanistan for anOval Office meeting. Obama said he welcomes "debate" among histeam, but that he "won't tolerate division."

Obama urged the Senate to confirm Petraeus swiftly andemphasized that the Afghanistan strategy he announced in Decemberwas not shifting with McChrystal's departure. He said it's "achange in personnel but it is not a change in policy."

Obama seemed to suggest that McChrystal's military career isover, saying the nation should be grateful "for his remarkablecareer in uniform."
