New Trenton mayor facing budget deficit, layoffs

Trenton Mayor-elect Tony Mack will implement outgoing Mayor Doug Palmer's proposal to layoff hundreds of city workers to cope with a $43 million budget shortfall, according to a Trentonian report.

The report says the plan proposed by Palmer calls for 475 employees to be cut, including 142 police officers and 78 firefighters.

According to the report, Mayor-elect Mack intends to fire all current department heads and turn over day-to day responsibilities to division heads until he can find adequate replacements.

Mayor Doug Palmer will finish out his final term in six days.
