Suspect shot during police chase in Newark

Police say a suspect was wounded tonight during a police chase in Newark.

Officials say police observed what they believed to be a narcotics deal. The officers say they then focused on the male involved in the alleged deal who appeared to have a weapon.

The suspect, 28-year-old Muraad Mallard, then fled the scene. Authorities say that at some point during the chase, a plain clothed police officer opened fire, hitting Mallard in the side and the leg.

Mallard then made his way to a house on Chelsea Avenue. Mallard is not a resident of the house, and those who were inside the home say they were startled to see a bloody stranger enter their home.

Officers then surrounded the house in search of a weapon. Police say they believe the weapon may have been fake.

Mallard is expected to make a full recovery.
