Newark street vendors now need proof of citizenship

Newark city officials are getting tough with the city's street vendors.

City officials are asking street vendors to provide a Social Security number when they renew their vendor license. The move blocks illegal immigrants, who do not have Social Security numbers, from renewing their licenses. Vendors are prohibited to operate without a license.

Some city council members say it is not within the city's rights to enforce Federal Immigration laws. The council recently passed a resolution that extends vendor licenses until September, allowing vendors more time to provide proof of citizenship.
