Passaic lays off 18 police officers, demotes 8 others

The Passaic Police Department gave 18 police officers pink slips yesterday and demoted eight others.

Many of the officers who were cut or demoted had between three and six years experience.

Seven of the officers in Passaic's 2007 police academy class were also let go. One of those officers laid off told News 12 New Jersey he was concerned about the cuts, saying the community's number one priority should be safety.

The 18 laid off officers represent roughly 10 percent of Passaic's entire police force.
