Ten defendants accused of spying for Russia have told a federal judge in New York that they are pleading guilty.

The pleas are expected to set the stage for the largestRussia-U.S. spy swap since the Cold War. The pleas took placeThursday, hours before the defendants were to be returned toRussia.

The defendants each announced their pleas to conspiracy to actas an unregistered agent of a foreign country. An 11th defendantwas a fugitive after he fled authorities in Cyprus following hisrelease on bail.

The arrests occurred more than a week ago, capping a decade-plusinvestigation of people who seemed to have embedded themselves inthe fabric of American life. Authorities said they were reportingwhat they learned in the U.S. to Russian officials.
