Senior citizen high-rise in Paterson evacuated

A senior citizen high-rise located at 211 20th Ave. in Paterson was evacuated yesterday after tenants went three days without air conditioning.

The heat is being blamed for the death of one resident. News 12 New Jersey was on the scene as residents were receiving cold water and being evaluated by EMTs.

PSEG says the building has been suffering from low voltage. Residents say the problem has also meant limited access to elevators.

Several complaints from residents prompted city officials to order the evacuation of the 21-story Murray M. Bisgaier Residence in Paterson Thursday afternoon.

PSEG says crews have to make adjustments at a nearby power station to correct the building's cooling problem. They have no estimate on how long that will take.

City health officials are working with tenants to make sure they are comfortable and have their medication.
