New station opened for skimmer boats along Passaic River

The former contaminated site of an abandoned boatyard in North Arlington is now the new home of skimmer boats used to clean up the Passaic River.

The boats, operated by the Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission, will work to clean up floating debris along the river.

Previously, boats would travel upriver from Newark to conduct clean up operations. The new station allows river cleanup crews to work more efficiently.

Crews have cleaned up 16 million pounds of debris from the Passaic River over the past 12 years.
