Newark police make city's largest drug bust during routine burglary investigation

Newark police made the largest drug bust in the city's history Monday night.

According to police, two detectives responded to a routine burglary investigation at an abandoned house on North 7th Street where they seized nearly seven kilos of cocaine. The detectives arrested 31-year-old Edwin Gonzales of East Orange, Stephanie Hamlett, 23, of Forked River, 33-year-old Iris Resto of Newark and Sadiqua Young, 31, of Newark. The four suspects face several illegal drug charges, including an attempt to distribute drugs within 1,000 feet from a school.

Mayor Sharpe James (D-Newark) commended the police officers on finding the drugs with a street value totaling $1 million.
