New Jersey sets aside $3 million for new police body armor

(08/05/04) EWING - A grant will provide $3 million to equip New Jersey police officers with new body armor.

Police officers say the armor is essential in helping save the lives of law enforcement officials throughout the state. They add that technology has worked to produce armor that is lighter and easier to maneuver in, thereby allowing officers to perform their duties more effectively.

Governor McGreevey (D-NJ) says the lives of 19 officers have been saved by body armor since 1981. All of New Jersey's police departments are eligible for the grant.
