Some gay couples in Asbury Park are critical of McGreevey's resignation

(08/13/04) ASBURY PARK - The gay community of Asbury Park is divided on Governor McGreevey's (D-NJ) decision to resign after announcing that he was gay.

Some gay couples feel that McGreevey is a hypocrite because of his stance on same-sex marriage. Based on his recent announcement they don't understand how he could have been against gay marriages. Others have called McGreevey a coward for resigning from office in the face of controversy. They say they want the governor to keep his office and fight any accusations coming his way.

One openly gay New Jersey politician says there was no way for McGreevey to come out and support gay marriages. He says as a closeted gay man, there was only so much McGreevey could do about certain issues.
