NJ residents, power officials prepare for effects of Tropical Storm Charley

(08/14/04) SEA BRIGHT - Tropical Storm Charley made some large waves at Shore beaches. Most people with whom News 12 New Jersey spoke say they are ready for the storm.

The threat of the tropical storm did not keep surfers away from the beach on Saturday. They enjoyed the larger-than-normal waves. Still, lifeguards are warning about strong currents following the storm on Sunday.

Other people say storms at the Jersey Shore can be unpredictable, so they are putting their lawn furniture inside in case of strong winds.

Members of the Sea Bright Fire Department say they are standing by because past storms have flooded parts of the borough. The Monmouth County Department of Emergency Management says they are looking out for power failures and flooding.

Jersey Central Power and Lighting officials have additional crews from surrounding states on standby in case Tropical Storm Charley knocks out the power in parts of New Jersey.
