Propane tank explosion forces closure of downtown Hackensack businesses

(08/21/04) HACKENSACK - A propane tank explosion forced the closure of part of downtown Hackensack late Saturday morning. The blast occurred in Hackensack's business district on 73 Main Street and scared dozens of nearby residents out of their homes.

Hackensack police say propane tanks in a storage container behind a plaza somehow ignited, sparking the explosion that broke through walls and shattered windows. About a half dozen businesses either directly affected from the blast or in the surrounding area had to be shut down.

Police say the explosion is still under investigation, and it is too early to tell if the blast is suspicious.
