Union City residents petition to switch to an elected school board

Approximately 3,000 Union City residents signed a petition requesting a November ballot question to switch from an appointed to an elected school board.

Under the current system, school board members are appointed by Mayor Brian Stack (D-Union City). But principal Jose Falto says the school system has become an employment agency for those people who are closely aligned with the mayor.

Five of the seven school board members work for the city, which leads critics to believe their allegiance is to the mayor and not to taxpayers and students. One resident says an elected school board allows for diversity and more educational dialogue.

Mayor Stack feels the petition is strictly about politics. The city clerk must decide within three weeks if there are enough valid signatures to force the ballot question.
