Jersey City police chief, mayoral candidate placed on unpaid leave during campaign

Jersey City Police Chief and mayoral candidate Ron Buonocore has been placed on unpaid leave by the acting mayor.

Buonocore says he is going to take legal action after receiving a letter notifying him he was being placed on unpaid leave as police chief. He says he was planning on taking accrued vacation time for the rest of the campaign.

The mayor's office points to the fact that the city is currently on orange, or high, alert due to terrorist threats. The mayor's chief of staff says Buonocore walked away from his responsibilities as chief to pursue his campaign for mayor. He also added that Buonocore was placed on unpaid leave because he is not allowed to ask for donations from members of his department.

Buonocore says he never asked any members of his department for donations, and he does not know if anyone who works for his campaign did.
