New municipal building open in Metuchen, some work still needs to be completed

The new municipal building in Metuchen is finally open after an approximately two and half year construction project. However, construction crews are still present on the property, finishing up some last minute work.

The project involved demolishing the old building located at Main Street and Route 27 and putting up a new one. The three-story, $6.4 million building is home to the borough's offices, an expanded council chamber, the police station and security.

According to Metuchen Mayor Ed O'Brien, some of the work that needs to be completed is getting the air conditioning and heating systems balanced and having lines painted in the parking lot. O'Brien says he opened the building prior to being completed in order to save money in rent on temporary space. He also says because the building was more than a year late in opening, he will try to recover the losses from the contractor.

All of the work is expected to be completed in the next couple of weeks.
