Mercer County family fights to change law about use of controversial drug

(08/28/04) MERCER COUNTY - One Mercer County family is fighting to get lawmakers to change their minds on the use of a controversial drug.

Don and Gerry McGrath say when their son, Sean, came down with cancer their whole lives changed. But what really surprised them was how one drug in particular made their son feel better. That drug was marijuana. Now the McGraths want it legalized for medical purposes.

The McGrath family says Sean, who was diagnosed with cancer at 26, was on numerous medications and chemotherapy. His brother says while the marijuana didn't cure him of caner it helped alleviate his suffering.

Sean passed away in June and ever since his death, his family has been lobbying to legalize marijuana for medical reasons. Assemblyman Reed Gusicora (D-NJ) plans to introduce a bill this fall to make the drug legal if a doctor prescribes its use.

Medical marijuana is already legal in nine states.
