Newark Housing Authority employees protest layoffs

(09/09/04) NEWARK Newark Housing Authority employees losing their jobs later this month held a rally Thursday night to protest the organizations staff reduction.

Housing authority officials say a 10 percent cut in the organizations subsidy led to the layoffs of 99 people. However, protesters who attended the rally say they witnessed wasteful spending by the housing authoritys executive director. Employees say they dont understand why the authority has money for various purchases but not enough funds to keep its employees.

The president of the union that represents many of the employees has filed both a grievance against the housing authority and a court injunction to stop the layoffs. The laid off employees were told their last day would be September 24.

Housing authority officials did not comment on the employees allegations.
