86-year-old man runs over couple in Wood-Ridge; husband killed, wife injured

An 86-year-old man ran over a couple with his car in a Wood-Ridge parking lot Tuesday, killing the husband and seriously injuring the wife.

Witnesses say Henry Steiner had just left the CVS Pharmacy on Valley Boulevard before the accident. They say he was backing up his SUV when the vehicle went between the building and several cars. Witnesses described Steiner as looking disoriented as he hit the elderly couple. Authorities say Steiner may have lost control of his vehicle.

Robert Carl was pronounced dead at the scene and his wife, Margaret, was taken to an area hospital where she remains in stable condition. Bergen County prosecutors are investigating the accident. Authorities say a medical condition or a vehicle malfunction are possible causes.

Steiner was not injured but taken to the hospital as well. There were no other injuries or any major damage to the pharmacy.
