Plans underway for old military base redevelopment in Bayonne

The Bayonne Local Redevelopment Authority is overseeing a proposed 15-year, $1 billion project to redevelop the old military base that sits off New York Harbor.

Jesse Ann Ransom, of the redevelopment authority, says the plan will use the piece of land to bring jobs back to Bayonne. Ransom says the authority would like to have a tall high rise along with high-rise residential buildings in the center of the property. Passenger facilities to go with cruise ships, hotels and restaurants would be built on the waterfront as well.

The plans for the 430-acres that used to belong to the military call for five neighborhoods, each with its own mix of homes, businesses and recreational areas. The plans also call for housing for 1,200 people. Since redevelopment has already begun, the first series of apartments could open in two years.
